I work with this guy Doug who has a series of pictures of his daughter pinned up above his desk. In each picture, his daughter is holding one of his shoes ... a nice, brown wingtip. It shows her as a tiny baby next to a big shoe all the way up to this year as a fifth-grader holding a pretty small shoe.
Who knows if we'll keep up with this and who knows if the lousy market for newspapers will force broadsheet papers to convert to a tabloid-size, or iPod size, but we combined Doug's idea with one Mari had which was to keep the front page of the paper from the day Eli was born.
Here's Eli with the May 18, 2006, New York Times. The lead headline -- a one column lede for those of you in the business -- is about the U.S. weighing its options with North Korea in terms of nuclear weapons. Eli seemed interested in the topic and then quickly fell asleep.
